Looking After Your Curtains

Guide to Looking After, Cleaning, and Maintaining Curtains

Curtains not only enhance the aesthetics of a room but also play a practical role in light control, insulation, and privacy. Proper care ensures they remain fresh, functional, and long-lasting. This guide will help you look after, clean, and maintain your curtains effectively.

Whilst all curtains can be dusted, don't use vacuum cleaners on delicate fabric like voiles and nets,

We recommend dry cleaning for all our curtains and roman blinds.

If using water or cleaning chemicals, spot test on an inconspicuous area first.

We don't take any responsibility for damage to your curtains or blinds whilst cleaning, use caution and common sense.

1. Routine Maintenance

A. Dusting and Vacuuming

Curtains attract dust and allergens over time. Regular dusting keeps them clean and reduces the need for frequent deep cleaning.

  • Frequency: Once a week or as needed.

  • Tools Needed:

    • A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.

    • Or a duster and cloth.

  • How-To:

    • Close the curtains completely.

    • Use the vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust, starting from the top and working downward.

    • Pay attention to folds, hems, and pleats where dust accumulates.

B. Shaking Out Dust

  • Take lightweight curtains down occasionally and shake them outdoors to remove embedded dust and dirt.

2. Spot Cleaning for Stains

Address stains immediately to prevent them from setting into the fabric.

  1. Tools Needed:

    • Mild detergent or fabric cleaner.

    • A clean, damp cloth.

  2. Steps:

  3. Blot (do not rub) the stained area with a damp cloth.

  4. Apply a small amount of diluted detergent to the stain and gently dab until it lifts.

  5. Rinse with a damp cloth to remove detergent residue.

  6. Allow the area to air dry completely.

3. Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is necessary every 6–12 months, depending on how much dust and dirt your curtains are exposed to.

A. Machine Washing

Many curtains are machine washable, but always check the care label first.

  1. Preparation:

    • Remove hooks, rings, or weights before washing.

    • Shake out any loose dust.

  2. Washing Instructions:

  3. Use a gentle cycle with cold water.

  4. Add a mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics.

  5. Avoid overloading the machine to prevent creasing.

  6. Drying:

  7. Hang the curtains to air dry while they’re still damp to minimize wrinkles.

  8. Avoid using a tumble dryer unless the care label allows it.

B. Hand Washing

For delicate or heavy fabrics that can’t be machine washed:

  1. Steps:

    • Fill a bathtub or large basin with lukewarm water and mild detergent.

    • Submerge the curtains and gently agitate them with your hands.

    • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

    • Gently press out excess water without wringing.

  2. Drying:

  3. Lay the curtains flat or hang them to air dry.

C. Professional Cleaning

For curtains made of delicate materials like silk, velvet, or those with elaborate embellishments, professional dry cleaning is the safest option.

4. Maintaining Curtain Hardware

The rods, hooks, and other hardware also require attention to ensure smooth operation and durability.

  • Dust Regularly: Wipe down rods and rings with a damp cloth to remove dust.

  • Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply a small amount of silicone spray to curtain rods if the curtains are hard to draw.

  • Inspect for Damage: Check for bent rods, broken hooks, or damaged rings, and replace them as needed.

5. Preventative Measures

A. Protect Against Sun Damage

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and weaken curtain fabric.

  • Use UV-blocking window films or sheer curtains to protect heavier drapes.

  • Rotate the curtains occasionally to ensure even wear.

B. Minimize Dust Accumulation

  • Keep windows and surrounding areas clean to reduce dust transfer onto curtains.

  • Consider using air purifiers to minimize airborne particles.

C. Avoid High Humidity

High humidity can lead to mould and mildew on curtains.

  • Use a dehumidifier in damp environments.

  • Ensure proper ventilation, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

6. Special Care for Different Curtain Fabrics

Cotton and Polyester:

  • Easy to maintain and often machine washable.

  • Use a warm or cold wash and mild detergent.

Silk:

  • Requires gentle handling and professional dry cleaning.

  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Velvet:

  • Regularly vacuum to maintain texture.

  • Spot clean stains carefully with a fabric cleaner or consult a professional cleaner.

Sheer and Lace Curtains:

  • Wash on a delicate cycle with cold water.

  • Hang to dry immediately to maintain their shape.

7. Seasonal Checkups

Twice a year, inspect your curtains for:

  • Fading or discoloration.

  • Loose threads, hems, or seams.

  • Stains or signs of mould and mildew.

8. When to Replace Curtains

While good maintenance extends the life of your curtains, they’ll eventually need replacement if:

  • The fabric is heavily stained or faded beyond repair.

  • They no longer match your interior design preferences.

  • The material has weakened or torn significantly.
