How To Clean Roller Blinds With Mould

How to Clean Roller Blinds of Mould

If your roller blinds develop mould, it’s essential to act promptly. Mould not only affects the appearance of your blinds but can also pose health risks. Here's a step-by-step guide to safely and effectively clean mould off your roller blinds.

Step 1: Assess the Material

Before cleaning, determine the material of your roller blinds:

  • Fabric Blinds: Proceed carefully, as fabric is prone to damage from harsh chemicals and moisture.

  • Vinyl or PVC Blinds: These are more resistant to moisture and can handle a deeper clean.

Check the manufacturer’s care instructions if available.

Step 2: Gather Supplies

You’ll need:

  • Soft cloths or sponges

  • Old towel

  • Mild detergent or dish soap

  • White vinegar

  • Warm water

  • A soft-bristled brush (optional)

  • A spray bottle (optional)

  • A bucket

  • Protective gloves and a mask (wear these before touching blind for safety when dealing with mould)

Step 3: Prepare the Area

  • Fully extend the blinds to expose the mould-affected areas.

  • Lay an old sheet or newspaper underneath to catch debris.

Step 4: Remove Loose Mould

  1. Dust: gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth to avoid spreading spores.

Step 5: Clean the Mould

For Fabric Roller Blinds

  1. Make a Cleaning Solution:

    • Mix one part white vinegar with four parts warm water in a bucket or spray bottle.

    • Add a few drops of mild detergent for extra cleaning power.

  2. Spot Clean:

  3. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution, wring it out, and gently dab the mouldy areas.

  4. Avoid soaking the fabric, as excessive moisture can cause damage.

  5. Rinse:

  6. Wipe the cleaned area with a cloth dampened in plain water to remove any vinegar or detergent residue.

  7. Dry:

  8. Use a dry towel to blot the blinds, then let them air dry completely before rolling them back up.

For Vinyl or PVC Roller Blinds

  1. Apply the Cleaning Solution:

    • Spray the vinegar-water mixture directly onto the mouldy areas, or apply with a sponge.

  2. Scrub Gently:

  3. Use a soft-bristled brush or sponge to scrub the affected areas.

  4. Rinse Thoroughly:

  5. Wipe the blinds with a damp cloth to remove any cleaning residue.

  6. Dry Completely:

  7. Use a clean, dry towel to remove moisture and prevent mould from returning.

Step 6: Prevent Future Mould Growth

  • Improve Ventilation: Ensure the room has adequate airflow to reduce humidity.

  • Use a Dehumidifier: In damp areas, a dehumidifier can help prevent mould.

  • Clean Regularly: Dust and clean your blinds regularly to avoid mould buildup.

  • Sunlight Exposure: Open your blinds to allow sunlight to naturally discourage mould growth.

When to Replace the Blinds

If the mould has deeply penetrated the material or caused extensive staining and damage, it may be time to replace the blinds, especially if they are fabric. For vinyl or PVC blinds, they might still warrant replacement if the stains can't be removed or the integrity of the material is damaged.
