How To Care For Wood Venetian Blinds

Wondering how to look after your wood venetians? Then read this.

Guide to Maintaining, Cleaning, and Caring for Wooden Venetian Blinds

Wooden Venetian blinds add privacy and light control to any room. With proper care and maintenance, you can preserve their natural beauty and functionality for many years. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you maintain, clean, and care for your wooden Venetian blinds.

1. Routine Cleaning

A. Dusting

Dusting your blinds regularly prevents the buildup of dirt and grime.

  • Tools Needed:

    • Microfibre cloth

    • Feather duster

    • Vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment

  • Steps:

    • Fully close the blinds so the slats are flat.

    • Use a microfibre cloth or duster to remove dust from each slat, working from top to bottom.

    • Reverse the blinds to dust the other side.

    • Alternatively, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment for efficient dust removal.

B. Quick Wipe-Down

For a slightly deeper clean, use a damp (not wet) cloth.

  • Dampen a microfibre cloth with water or a wood-safe cleaner.

  • Wipe each slat gently, ensuring you dry it immediately with a dry cloth to prevent water damage.

2. Deep Cleaning

Occasionally, your blinds may require a deeper clean to remove grime, especially in areas like kitchens or bathrooms.

Steps:

  1. Dust First: Always remove loose dust before deep cleaning.

  2. Prepare a Cleaning Solution:

    • Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in lukewarm water.

    • Avoid harsh cleaners or excessive moisture, as they can damage the wood.

  3. Clean Each Slat:

  4. Dip a cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution and wring it out thoroughly.

  5. Wipe each slat individually, then dry immediately with a soft cloth.

  6. Tough Spots:

  7. For sticky or greasy spots, add a small amount of white vinegar to the cleaning solution.

  8. Gently scrub the area, then rinse and dry.

3. Maintaining the Finish

Wooden blinds are often treated with a protective finish, which needs occasional care to preserve its look and feel.

  • Polishing:

    • Use a wood polish or furniture wax designed for natural wood to maintain its shine.

    • Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and buff to a gentle shine.

  • Avoid Excess Moisture:

    • Excess water can cause warping or staining, so ensure any cleaning method is as dry as possible.

  • Prevent Fading:

    • Install blinds away from prolonged direct sunlight, or use UV-blocking window films to protect the wood from fading or discoloration.

4. Caring for the Mechanism

The tilting cords and lifting mechanisms also need care to ensure smooth operation.

  • Inspect and Clean:

    • Dust cords and mechanisms with a damp cloth occasionally to remove grime.

    • Check for fraying or wear and replace cords if necessary.

  • Lubricate Moving Parts:

    • Use a silicone spray or dry lubricant to keep the pulley system functioning smoothly.

5. Preventative Care

Taking proactive steps can help extend the life of your wooden Venetian blinds:

  • Avoid Excessive Humidity:

    • Wooden blinds are sensitive to moisture and can warp in high-humidity areas like bathrooms. Consider faux wood alternatives for these spaces.

  • Handle with Care:

    • Use the pull cords gently to adjust the blinds. Avoid forcing the mechanism.

  • Keep Windows Clean:

    • Regularly clean your windows to reduce the transfer of dust and dirt onto your blinds.

6. Seasonal Maintenance

Twice a year, give your blinds a thorough inspection and deep clean:

  • Tighten any loose screws in the mounting brackets.

  • Check the cords for wear and replace if necessary.

  • Inspect the slats for signs of warping or cracks.

7. When to Replace or Repair

Despite proper care, wooden Venetian blinds may need replacement or repairs over time:

  • Repair: Replace individual slats or cords as needed.

  • Replace: If the blinds are significantly warped, discolored, or the mechanism is beyond repair, consider replacing them.

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using Excess Water: Wood is sensitive to moisture. Always clean with a damp cloth and dry immediately.

  • Using Harsh Chemicals: Avoid abrasive cleaners or ammonia-based products that can damage the wood’s finish.

  • Skipping Regular Cleaning: Allowing dust and grime to accumulate can make cleaning more difficult and may damage the wood.

At Harrogate Blinds, we recommend gentle dusting, weekly if possible. Do not use any harsh chemicals on your wood venetians. Keep them as dry as possible. The brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner should be sufficient to keep your blinds clean. Just be careful not to suck up the cords as they may get damaged.
