How To Care For Roman Blinds

Guide to Caring for, Cleaning, and Maintaining Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are an elegant addition to any space, offering a blend of style and functionality. Proper care ensures their longevity, preserving their beauty and functionality for years. This is a general guide only, we recommend DRY CLEANING for

any romans purchased from Harrogate Blinds Limited.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Regular Maintenance

Routine care helps prevent dirt and dust from accumulating on your Roman blinds.

  • Dust Weekly: Use a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove surface dust.

    • Start from the top and work your way down to avoid redistributing dust.

    • Pay special attention to folds where dust often accumulates.

  • Spot Check for Stains: Periodically inspect your blinds for small stains or marks, addressing them promptly to prevent setting.

2. Deep Cleaning

Occasionally, Roman blinds need more thorough cleaning. The method will depend on the material of the blinds.

A. Fabric Blinds

  • Vacuum First: Always start with a vacuum to remove loose dirt.

  • Hand Washing for Washable Fabrics: NOTE: your Harrogate Blinds romans should not be hand washed, we recommend DRY CLEANING only!

    1. Remove the blinds from the headrail (check manufacturer instructions for easy detachment).

    2. Detach any rods or supports to avoid damage.

    3. Use lukewarm water and mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals as they may discolor or weaken the fabric.

    4. Gently scrub stained areas using a soft sponge.

    5. Rinse thoroughly and lay flat to dry to prevent wrinkles or shrinkage.

B. Non-Washable or Delicate Fabrics

  • Spot Cleaning: Mix mild detergent with water. Dip a soft cloth in the solution and gently dab the stained area.

  • Steam Cleaning: Use a handheld steamer to refresh and sanitize blinds without soaking them.

  • Professional Cleaning: For delicate or heavily soiled blinds, consult a professional dry cleaner to avoid damage.

3. Cleaning Mechanisms and Accessories

The cords, rails, and pulleys also need occasional care:

  • Clean the Rails and Headrails:

    • Use a damp cloth to wipe down the metal or plastic rails.

    • Apply a small amount of silicone spray lubricant to keep the mechanism smooth.

  • Inspect Cords and Chains:

    • Check cords for signs of fraying and replace if necessary.

    • Clean chains and cords with a damp cloth to prevent grime buildup

    • Ensure cords and chains are still child safety compliant (this is a legal requirement, they should have breakaway mechanisms, be in a safety clip or wrapped around a cleat to prevent children choking).

4. Preventative Measures

Preventative care minimizes wear and tear:

  • Avoid Excess Sunlight: Prolonged exposure can fade fabrics. Use a sheer curtain or a UV-blocking window film to protect your blinds.

  • Keep Windows Clean: Clean windows reduce the transfer of dust and grime onto the blinds.

  • Handle with Care: Always use the pull cord or chain gently to extend the mechanism's life.

5. Seasonal Checks

Twice a year, inspect your Roman blinds for:

  • Alignment: Ensure they open and close smoothly and hang evenly.

  • Wear and Tear: Check for loose stitching, frayed edges, or worn-out mechanisms.

6. When to Replace or Upgrade

Despite regular maintenance, Roman blinds can wear out over time. Consider replacing them if:

  • The fabric is significantly faded or damaged.

  • The operating mechanism frequently malfunctions.

  • They no longer match your interior decor.

Here at Harrogate Blinds, the roman blinds we provide are usually attached to the header by velcro. This allows for easy repositioning over time as the fabric settles or to be removed for cleaning purposes. The cords are attached to clips that can be undone so the blind fabric can be removed for dry cleaning. Re-attach the cords when putting the blind back up.
